Once upon a time there was a super kewl band called Oh-Ok. They began in the 80's and were a very short lived band but they made good music! Oh-OK weren't twee but it's easy to label them as such because of singers Lynda Stipe (Michael Stipe's sister) and Linda Hopper's cutesy vocals and how they sing about eating snacks around the campfire and their album cover has line drawings of little girls on it. Sometimes they get uber-twee but then on other songs they sound like post-punk band Delta 5 and they just sound weird and dark to be anything remotely twee.

I really love Lauren Poor's work. Every photograph she takes is so heavily crafted. You can tell she styles every single aspect of the photograph from the quirky handmade props to the body paint that her models are usually seen wearing. Always a bit experimental and colorful, each of Poor's photographs often end up looking like something completely unlike a typical photograph. They're edited, layered, and ultimately enhanced but, of course, never with something as typical as Photoshop. Rudimentary scribbles, bits of pipe cleaner, and paint smudges frame her portraits of already heavily-made up subjects. They're icons, they're weirdo yearbook photos, they're sociopolitical statements...they're really cool!

Mulberry has such colorful and beautiful ad campaigns and their most recent one is no exception. Filled with larger than life props of melting ice creams and broken sweets, the photo spread for the Spring/Summer 2012 collection is an adorable (and maybe a little bit surrealist) campaign. The colors are SO perfect. I really love this to death!

A thousand moons ago I made a super popular 8tracks playlist (everyone knows I'm obsessed with making 8tracks playlists, right?!) called "Hanging Out With Lydia Deetz" in honor of my favorite goth girl ever, Lydia from the movie "Beetlejuice." Now I make them for Rookie, picking a movie/tv teen girl character who embodies the monthly theme: The Plastics for "Beginnings," Ginger from Gingersnaps for "Secrets," The Pink Ladies for "Girl Gang," Margot from The Royal Tenenbaums for "Home," and Effy from Skins for "Up All Night." I LOVE making these playlists because it's so fun to collect music that I think the character would listen to/describes their personality. My favorite one is Margot's, because my itunes library is so Wes Anderson-y anyway. It's also my most popular playlist! 3,000+ plays, whaaaat?!

Japanese designer Tokuko Maeda's Spring/Summer 2012 collection was beautiful! Inspired by traditional folk art and textiles from Mexico, the clothes showcased all of the rich textures and colors that come from Mexican clothing but still incorporated typical Japanese silhouettes.

It's lazy rock. Is that a genre? Can I just make up that genre? Sleeping Bag, if you're reading this, don't get offended if I call your music "lazy rock," 'cause I love you guys.

GOTTA LOVE THOSE ACCENTS. But really though, this song is cute. Kind of shrill and marching band-ish but those are good song qualities in my book. I love it. Shrag is a great band.

ALSO, to bands EVERYWHERE: Delete your Myspaces. If you are a band whose website is a Myspace page you need to change that quickly. Get a tumblr, that's free. Myspace makes you look suuuuuuuuuper dated. Nobody uses Myspace anymore anyways.

Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva

Russian artist Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva's work is filled with so many surrealist landscapes, each crowded with flat renderings of everything from floating furniture to human gardens. Her imaginary subjects are seen hovering above mountain tops or slanted into distortion, as if facing some universal funhouse mirror. Her work is truly other-worldly. Her series Homebodies tucks humans amongst household items and her 2011 animation The Lake is a short (but hypnotizing) trip into some sort of lakeside dimension where nobody seems to go anywhere and crystals materialize into thin air. Cool.

Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva is always playing with proportion and the human body. Look closely enough at some of her more crowded illustrations and you'll find people bent in all directions, making her works flatness even more apparent to the viewer. She plays more with shapes in her series The Dummies and has fun with Big Leg Emma, cutting her off and stretching her in all sorts of ways. I especially love The Twins, where she puts people inside themselves. Hmmmm....

The Lake, as far as I know, is her first animation. I really think with the sense of movement she conveys in her paintings (with the different directions and the way she draws her slanted and changing figures) Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva will definitely make some sick animated films. I hope she does! I really love her work.

I can't wait to have an apartment/home all to myself that I can decorate. Who knows when that will be! But, I've always loved uniquely decorated spaces and these homes are so amazing. My favorite type of home is one that truly balances modern with old. My current house is a salt-box style house and everything is very rustic in the decor and architecture (we have no doorknobs, only latches, and we have a lot of colonial-style furniture.) I love dark wood and furniture fit for a cabin, but I also really like modern furniture and art. I remember a thousand moons ago I saw this tv special on people who had taken really old barns and renovated the insides to be these sleek, completely modern buildings. They looked like crumbling old barns on the outside, but inside they looked like museums. It was so neat! But my future holds apartments the size of shoeboxes, so catch up with me in 20+ years and we'll see where my interior design dreams are :)

I often find myself falling in love with houses and decorated-spaces over the internet. I'm currently obsessing over these three (very different) homes:

This"Beach Street Loft" in Boston. I LOVE that staircase with all of the plants and the color combinations in the "theater/living room" are so good. I feel like these pictures were taken in the 70's, maybe? Or not! I just love all of the Indian textiles and animal statues. Such an interesting looking house.

This London townhouse. This house seems so clean and minimalist, but it's not that textbook minimalism that comes to mind for me (ex: sleek white couches that nobody can sit on). I love all of the artwork, especially the framed butterflies and other pictures above the mantle. Even the bathroom is great, with its black and white checkered floor and bright blue paisley wallpaper. So pretty!

Jess Wright's Melbourne home. This house is so filled with the perfect type of colorful clutter and all of the artwork is SO GOOD. I love all the kitsch, of course. So many Virgin Mary statues and cute children's artwork. I could fill my whole future house with children's artwork!

The Walker Art Center is having an exhibit called "Graphic Design: Now In Production" which showcases over 250 artists and 1,400 images that represent modern graphic design and production. They just issued the exhibit's catalogue and it looks SO GOOD! Like, holy shit, this catalogue is NECESSARY. My brain is drooling. I wish I could see the exhibit!!!

3 CURRENT MUSICAL OBSESSIONS

1. Manic Attracts is my current musical obsession. Bratty punk songs that sort of remind me a bit of Christian Death (except maybe even MORE rocking out???) They make me want to head bang forever and that's saying a lot because I'm such a princess.

2. Scout Niblett's "Sweat Heart Fever" is country music minimalism at its finest. Wait, is it country? Is it folk? WHAT IS IT? I like it. I've had "Big Bad Man" stuck in my head for the past week or so.

3. Well, I've always loved Chuck Berry but "Come On" is just SO GOOOD. I think it might be my favorite Chuck Berry song. Such desperation! Also, apparently that's Martha Berry (his MOM?) on back vocals. COOL.

I love Alex Prager's video series for the NYT showcasing some of the greatest cinematic villains, played by some of my current favorite actors and actresses in film. Brad Pitt is actually, surprisingly, way too good as Jack Nance from Eraserhead and Viola Davis as Nurse Rachett is so chilling. They're all very simple, short, and good-looking. They are, essentially, moving photographs. It's a great follow-up to last years 14 Actors Acting. Not all of them are specific villains though, some are just channeling archetypes like "The Siren" or "The Firestarter." They've got this fantastically surreal quality to them. Watch them all here.

Brandi Strickland's "The Other Is Looking In On You"

Because everyone and their grandmother is making collages these days, it's often hard for me to feel inspired by the art form. But Barbara Strickland's mixed media work in her series "The Other Is Looking In On You" is the perfect combination of just the right amount of quirky magazine clippings with gouache and acrylic work composing most of the pieces. The series is a psychedelic subtle tribute to the Garden of Eden and Ancient Civilizations. There's a sense of old-world ritual and exploration (dancing amongst Moai and Aztec Pyramids) with notes of apocalypse and other-worldly presence (hands dropping humans out of the sky, a giant snake peaking out behind the sun.) It's an interesting, and really beautiful, narrative.

Eyeball Ring

I really want an eyeball ring but I can't find any that I like anywhere! Google search turns up cat-eyed rings and rounded eyeball rings, but I want one that's more of an oval. Also most of them are crazy expensive. Anyone know where I can get an eyeball ring like the one I want? Etsy sites that I've found are sort of sketchy. I guess everyone gets them in vintage shops in Japan and Europe :(

An Ode to the Moujiks

It's common internet knowledge that I love pugs and french bulldogs. So, when I realized I had NEVER even mentioned the great Moujik on this blog, I was like "am I crazy???"

Moujik was Yves Saint Laurent's french bulldog. He actually had multiple french bulldogs, all named Moujik. I first saw a photo of him and Moujik at this amazing Yves Saint Laurent exhibit which I accidentally stumbled upon in Montreal. Seeing YSL's work throughout the years up close was breathtaking. He was a true couturier. He once said of the first Moujik,

"We are both set in our ways, with out foibles, but most important of all we have the same tastes. He likes certain materials – don't laugh, but the sound of taffeta being unrolled sends him into a frenzy."

Wow, YSL WOULD have a dog that loved taffeta, wouldn't he?

I love all of the pictures that can be found of Yves Saint Laurent with his dogs. He's often on the floor, drawing, with Moujik close by watching him work. I'm not sure how many he had in his lifetime, but all of them were certainly adored. He's just sort of there, amongst all of these beautiful clothes, looking funny and a little bit surprised (all pugs and bulldogs seem to have this constant expression of surprise on their faces. It's the eyes, for sure.)

Moujik II and Moujik III were subjects of some of Yves Saint Laurent's Love posters, one of them done by Andy Warhol. I would kill to get my hands on one of them! I already searched, they're like upwards of $1800.

French bulldogs and pugs are such funny animals, but judging by so many people in the fashion and art industry who own them I would say they are very creative and posh animals, right?

In response to the abundance of t-shirts in these developing countries, Project Repat buys those t-shirts from the local businesses, re-sells them in the U.S., and then donates that money to charities in Africa. That is one insane, and charitable, journey for a t-shirt! They also just launched a kickstarter campaign to help produce products out of donated t-shirts, all hand crafted by local artisans. I'm reading four really good books/magazines at once so I figured I would tell you all how great they are on my bloggy blog because I CAN. Click through for some wordy awesomeness.

1. Dear Diary by Lesley Arfin

Lesley Arfin is one of my favorite writers. She is fucking hilarious and has a really unique voice. If you've never read any of her work please go to her website right now and read everything on it until you laugh so hard you fall off your chair/couch/the Statue of Liberty/wherever else you're reading this post. My personal favorite is How To Be Punk because Arfin actually was a punk (not a loser poseur) and she totally gets that punks love old people and that the Dixie Chicks are so punk rock! Even though I've been a fangirl for a while now I just started reading Dear Diary (sshh don't tell her that). I suck, I know.

BUT ANYWAY, Dear Diary is an extension of her column for Vice Magazine where she made present day comments on her old diary entries. Arfin kept a diary since she was in middle school all the way through college and every entry is completely and totally teen girl angst/love/sadness/everything. She had a typical teenage experience but at the same time she definitely didn't. Arfin was a druggie (her adventures lead her to heroin) but is currently sober and completely sXe. Her teen years were just so god damn INTERESTING and because her diaries were so meticulous you actually almost live her life vicariously through them. Every crush, fight, break-up, rave, makeout session...it's total gold. So BUY IT. Also, did you know Lesley writes for Rookie? Yah! Also she follows me on Twitter/friends on Facebook so I guess this means I'm cool (I'm not).

2. The Better of McSweeney's Vol. 2 by Various Writers

I know what you're thinking and apparently it's a gallbladder. Anybody who knows me I <3 Dave Eggers / everything ever created from Mcsweeney's. My dad found me this baby in the hellpit that was the Borders closing sale and it's SO GOOD. I really love collections of short stories because novels + schoolwork don't work too well with me right now, especially when I am super sucked into a book and will LITERALLY avoid all schoolwork to read it. In fact, all of the works in this post allow me to just pick them up, read a bit, and then put them down without freaking out about what's going to happen next (except maybe Dear Diary).

I love Mcsweeney's because it's my kind of humor. It's biting and dry and witty. This book has some very twisted and quirky story lines. My favorite was "The Specialist" which is about a woman suffering from pains in her midriff that end up being a huge ice cave inside her body. A lot of the stories I've read just make me say "Whaaaat???" I'm not done the collection yet so there's much more to come but I can tell you right now that this is a fantastic collection. Buy it! I wonder if Vol. 1 is just as good? Oh who am I kidding, it's a McSweeney's collection, duh it's good.

3. The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf

Sent to me in a wonderful feminist lit package from the wondergrrrl Marisa Meltzer, The Beauty Myth is a book about how the concept of beauty is, essentially, nonexistent. Yet this myth is currently holding women down in ways they could have never imagined. Will women ever reach equality with the male sex when there is this undeniable pressure to be beautiful? I said the other day to a few friends, "We live in a society where if a woman wears a short skirt, it doesn't mean she's simple wearing a short skirt. It means she's asking for it, she's a slut, she's going to get raped, she's desperate, she's blah blah blah." Men do not have this social construct swirling around them like women do. If a woman alters her appearance to be "pretty" or doesn't alter it at all, the universe WILL extract obnoxious meanings from it. That's what Naomi Wolf is talking about and it's very interesting. Breaking it down into Work, Religion, Culture, Sex, Violence, etc. Wolf examines the beauty myth inside and out through detailed research and I felt sick reading about court case after court case. It's great and important. Read it!

4. Apartamento Magazine Issue 7

I flipped through an issue of Apartamento one time in a book store and it always stuck with me. So I ordered the current issue and IT RULES. It's "an everyday life interiors magazine" and mainly focuses on, well, interiors. Apartamento might read as a simple interior design magazine but it's not! There's an article on house spirits, on ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arrangements), and an article about the perfect fast food burger. Not to mention the SICK house spreads of Kenny Scharf, Issey Miyake's MOM, and Bruce Benderson, and more beautiful houses/apartments I wish I could live in. I had never even heard of Bruce Benderson but his interview really stuck with me because I totally agreed with everything he had to say about popular design and hipster culture. His house is painted completely technicolor! I have to read his work, he seems awesome.

I would also say that Apartamento is the best looking magazine I have ever read. It's tiny and thick with beautiful film photos and colorful text. It's not minimalist either! Wooh! I'm just sucker for good design and when a magazine has beautiful design AND amazing content, I'm all over it. If you're interested in interior design or just people's houses and lifestyles in general, seriously buy Apartamento.

They're an English psychedelic-pop band from the late 70's, fronted by surrealist wonderguy Robyn Hitchcock. Something about his voice reminds me of P-Orridge in Psychic TV. The song titles they choose are definitely kooky (ex: "He's A Reptile" and "I Want To Be An Anglepoise Lamp"). Underwater Moonlight is definitely their best album, in my opinion.

Riikka Sormunen: Creepy, Beautiful Gals

Helsinki artist Riikka Sormunen's artwork is hauntingly beautiful. Her brooding subjects are often paused in moments of reflection, always with some sort of monster or unholy symbol lurking in the background. Whether it's two orange handprints printed in a girl's sweater or a minute picture enclosed in a locket, there is always something peculiar embedded in a Riikka Sormunen work of art. Deeply mysterious, her paintings are practically begging for accompanying stories. But isn't the best part of analyzing a surrealist work, if you can call Sormunen's work surrealist, developing the story behind the piece?

Vagueness usually opens the door to the spookiest of interpretations :)

PIPILOTTI RIST TAKES PHOTOGRAPHS OF MY BRAIN AND USES THEM IN HIGH BROW ART INSTALLATIONS. Just kidding, but I feel deeply connected to Rist's art somehow. I think she understands the power of visual imagery in a way that most artists, especially video artists, can't seem to. I just love her installation work so much. I hope to experience it some day because it's completely mesmerizing and gorgeous. It's just so powerful! Art that is truly powerful (not shocking, lord knows we have enough of that) but actually makes you catch your breath and collapse into the piece is hard to come by. I also love stretching the limits of artistic mediums, especially (right now) with artwork that is projected. I posted this video awhile back which takes you behind the scenes of the show she had in February 2009 at the MOMA called "Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters)"

I am obsessed with this Manuel Bolaño Spring/Summer 2012 collection! Anything that is colorful, patterned, and peppered with 60's granny vibes will always win my little heart. I was confused by the black tears streaming down each model's face. How can they be so unhappy in clothes so cute?

Bolaño won the award for best womenswear collection at the 080 Barcelona Fashion Spring/Summer 2012. The whole collection is very kooky and although pastel isn't exactly my favorite color scheme, I really liked this! The bright candy stripes and gradient knits really drove me crazy. It, very subtly, reminded me of the last fall Missoni collection but I think this was much more youthful. It's actually very Kawaii!

You click and you click and you click through cats, rainbows, and eyeballs in order to get around the website. It's a worthwhile journey that can be a little cryptic, but it's never not adorable. Everything is adorable, EVERYTHING. Both of them are amazing artists and I can't get enough of their illustrations.

I really love the sticker collections Café con Leche carries. The most interesting packages are the Café con Leche's own, which are a surprise bundle of different styles and sizes. You can also get sticker packages from other artists (who are some of my favorites!) like Milkbbi or Sarah McNeil. These Ginette Lapalme ceramic cat stickers are hilarious! Did I mention everything is eco-friendly? WOOHOO!

Café con Leche also has a sick collection of zines and art/comic publications like Gang Bang Bong and Monocromo. I thought Casas para Perros was especially interesting, which is Roi and Ines' newest zine. Apparently they had a moment where they "understood telepathically what dogs really want for houses." Woaaaah, awesome.

It was done by Portuguese design collective Cãoceito and they obviously put a ton of work into it. They wanted to pay tribute to all of their favorite album covers, which they recreated themselves. Gunta Stözl: Bauhaus Queen

Who is Gunta Stözl and why should you care about her? Well, she was a German artist who basically took the Bauhaus art movement and applied it to textiles. Not to mention she was one of the few, or maybe the only, female Bauhaus masters! And you KNOW how much I love a female artist because I'm biased like that.

Mini history lesson for those unaware: The Bauhaus art movement was a German movement that ranged from everything from graphic design to furniture to the especially adored architecture. It was more of a school than a movement but you get the idea. Essentially, Bauhaus really pioneered the entire modern movement as we know it. It was all about working together (communist tone, of course) as artists to maintain excellent craftsmanship while creating extremely modern, put practical, design. There are a lot of Bauhaus works that I don't like (those that veer into abstract expressionist territory and I'm not a huge fan) but there are many that I do love and Stözl's textiles (wall hangings, carpets, fabrics) are some of my favorites. I've been revisiting this De La Soul album recently. I really love them and this album is just the best ever. Sometimes I have to take a break from Public Enemy, YA KNOW? I only listen to three rap artists anyway because I'm not that cool. I also love the line where he says it's a "Daisy Age" because something about that sounds so nice. De La Soul were such hippies, actually. Anyway this song is groovy.

Bonnie Brenda Scott, a Philadelphia-based artist, defines her work as being as intricate and "meditatively obsessive." Her work tends to exhibit these intestine-like swirls of paint that take on the form of everything from body parts to gaping monsters to, not surprisingly, actual intestines. Painting isn't Scott's only medium, her portfolio is filled with other three-dimensional treasures. Like her 2009 exhibit The Wilderness Society at Nexus Foundation that showcased 61 pieces of her artwork; sculpture, prints, paintings, all under the umbrella theme of hunting. She's too cool!

I interviewed photographer Kate Engelbrecht about her book The Girl Project for Urban Outfitters! The book is really amazing, you should all buy it! The idea of giving cameras to teenage girls across the country to document their lives was just so inspiring. The image of teen girls in pop culture has definitely been tarnished in the past few years. We're not all spoiled brats who wear juicy sweatsuits, I swear! The Girl Project is teenage girl emotion, experience, and creativity at its core.

It's funny because I'm a teenage girl and teenage girls fascinate me, which is why I wrote my junior term paper on how teen girls develop a sense of identity (using My So-Called Life as a pop culture reference!) I wonder if I can major in "teen girlhood" in college. Like instead of women's studies it's just teenager studies. If only!

I was very inspired by this Marc Jacobs look, a checked gingham sheer shirt (collar all the way up of course) layered under a gauzy, sequined, white dress. Topped with a boxy pale blue cropped jacket that almost looks like it's made out of rubber. I love all the elements, separately and together. I loved MJ's take on the flapper dress, combining futuristic looking materials and colors (for some reason baby blue will never not seem futuristic to me) with a traditional cut. This look is just so pulled together and TIGHT and has just the right amount of texture. I dig it!

I have many obsessions. I might have TOO many obsessions. I tend to see something that I love and then I think it is THE greatest thing ever for a short period of time. Sometimes I try to tell people about whatever I'm freaking out over and they usually don't care so I end up blogging about it here. Lately I've been into BOONDOGGLES.

I found these pictures of "boondoggles" (or, landyards or braids made out of gemp/plastic string) on the internet and got really obsessed with them. When I was younger I learned a few of these stitches at my numbah 1 Jewish kids camp. Why I went to camp, I don't know. Needless to say I was doing a lot of crafts, okay?

I definitely knew how to do spiral (aka chinese) staircase and still do, but that's so easy! I also knew cobra and double cobra and I am pretty sure I knew the box stitch. If you're unfamiliar with gemp stitches, you might be reading this not knowing what the hell I'm talking about. That's fine because I also found this AMAZING website where there are step by step guides on how to do certain stitches! Wow! It's called Boondoggleman.com. GO FIGURE!

I'm mostly interested in the larger, thicker stitches like the Superbrick Stitch and especially The Corkscrew Stitch! They look crazy! They could make really cool pieces of jewelry, right? Or crowns? I just love them. I used to own spools of this string! Agh! Maybe, someday, when I have the time, I will get to make some of them.

Pajaki Chandeliers

If there is one thing I love, it's colorful paper decorations. I have always been attracted to beautiful party decorations, tissue paper flowers, and especially papel picado! I have four paper lanterns hanging above my desk and a paper string of rainbow cats above my bed. Not to mention my bedroom mirror has tinsel hanging off it! Yay, shiny! My room is white with gray carpet so I try to make it as colorful as possible through my decorations.

That's why when I saw these Pajaki paper chandeliers I fell in love! Aren't they gorgeous?! You can get these chandeliers from The Polish Art Center, which is a treasure trove of beautiful things if you search for them hard enough. Just look at this flowered headpiece! Also, "pajaki" literally translates to "spiders of straw" and I really really really love that.

1930's Teen Dreams

A good friend of my grandmother's recently unearthed a notebook of her mother's, who had been a young teenager in the early 1930's. The notebook is filled with illustrations of old movie stars from the 1930's-1940's, drawn during the period of 1930-1931. I just love the drawings so much!

There are a few reasons why I think these drawings are so amazing. First of all, you can tell that she copied them from photos of the actors. They are not traced but instead drawn in green, red, and black ink. Such detail has been put into these drawing and you can tell she really took her time recreating the pictures. Another reason is that these drawings really carry a lot of meaning to this girl. In the inside cover there is a letter she has written to whoever looks at the notebook. It's hard to make out due to how faded it is, but she writes:

"I like the stars and hope someday one of them may see this book which I made in their honor. I am now fourteen years old and soon to be fifteen...All stars are beautiful...I hope not any of the stars become offended if they ever see the pictures I did of them because some of them are so beautiful it's impossible to make them look like themselves...I always hope that someday I may see Hollywood and meet some stars especially Jackie Coogan. My letter is finished please don't mind my writing."

Ha! And the writing really IS hard to read! But isn't that just so sweet? She hoped that none of the stars would get offended if they saw it and didn't like how they were drawn! Awww!!! You know, these days when teen girls love movie stars they might place a photograph or a poster on their wall or even reblog a picture to their blog. But this girl spent hours drawing these pictures of the stars she loved and I really respect that! She was in love with the glamour of Hollywood, in a decade when movies were spectacular one time events at the theater. She didn't even say she wanted to be a movie star, she simply just wanted to meet them! She signs each picture with "Best Wishes, and then the actress's signature, often outlining it several times to get it perfect. Isn't that adorable? I can just imagine her going to the movies and falling in love with the stars and using that admiration to create this notebook. Click through to see more of them!

Original Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice is one of my all time favorite movies. How I long for the old Tim Burton days when everything wasn't done in CGI! Beetlejuice was the perfect spooky comedy and the art direction is out of this world. I read somewhere on the internet that a Beetlejuice remake was happening and I had a mini panic attack. My research led to nothing about a remake BUT it did lead me to the original plot for Beetlejuice. Can you guys believe this?! Beetlejuice was supposed to be 1000x scarier!

Michael McDowell's original script is far less comedic and much more violent; the Maitlands' car crash is depicted graphically, with Barbara's arm being crushed and the audience hearing their screams for help as they slowly drown in the river. A reference to this remained in all versions of the script, as Barbara remarks that her arm feels cold upon returning home as a ghost. Instead of possessing the Deetzes and forcing them to dance during dinner, the Maitlands cause a vine-patterned carpet to come to life and attack the Deetzes by tangling them to their chairs. The character of Betelgeuse — envisioned by McDowell as a winged demon who takes on the form of a short Middle Eastern man—is also intent on killing the Deetzes rather than scaring them, and wants to rape Lydia instead of marry her. This version of Betelgeuse only needs to be exhumed from his grave to be summoned, after which he is free to wreak havoc; he cannot be summoned or controlled by saying his name three times, and wanders the world freely, appearing to torment different characters in different manifestations, such as a punk rocker (to try to seduce Lydia) and an IRS agent (to subject Charles to a fake audit). McDowell's script also featured a second Deetz child, nine-year-old Cathy, the only person to see the Maitlands and the subject of Betelgeuse's homicidal wrath in the film's climax, during which he mutilates her while in the form of a rabid squirrel before revealing his true form. The film was to have concluded with the Maitlands, Deetzes, and Otho conducting an exorcism ritual that destroys Betelgeuse, and the Maitlands transforming into miniature versions of themselves and moving into Adam's model of their home, which they refurbish to look like their house before the Deetzes moved in.

Um okay I thought Beetlejuice was pretty trippy but this is just like "WHAAAT????" The original sounds INSANE. This isn't like David Lynch level crazy, this is like a script Clive Barker would write. I wouldn't change Beetlejuice at all but the original sounds like it would make a good movie too. And Burton originally wanted Sammy Davis Jr. for Betelgeuse?! Crazy!

I Saw You Standing (ISYS) is a really awesome web site that catalogs London street style. The videos are a nice alternative to typical street style blogs that are mainly just pictures. Not to mention the people chosen aren't just wearing head to toe designer looks. Ah! That stuff really annoys me. Jack & Jil and The Sartorialist are great I guess but I'd take Hel Looks and Drop Snap over the fancy street style blogs featured in Vogue any day. Sometimes it's nice to see what people who AREN'T fashion editors and models are wearing, right?

Anyway, in addition to the videos ISYS also runs a really awesome blog! I love their series called "What We Wore" that focuses on peoples old photos of...what they wore!

I was very obsessed with books about dolls when I was a child. Hitty, Her First Hundred Years was one of my favorites. The book was published in 1929! Wow! It's actually a sad book, really. It's just 100 years of being abandoned, passed from person to person, etc. It has a nice ending (if I remember correctly.) I haven't read it since I was about 9...I would love to read it again.

The book was far from being a picture book but it did have a few really beautiful drawings. You can see more of them in this blog post. So happy they've been scanned and compiled on the internet!

Do you ever stumble across a bandcamp page and the music so perfect and you just sort of get insanely excited? That's how I felt when I found this album "Flower Days" by the band Wizard Oz. Hazy basement beats that make me want to frolic in a meadow Lux Lisbon style. The album touches on 8-bit videogame music and a lo-fi sound, topped with tired Fleet Foxes-esque vocals. Makes for a sweet combination! If you don't have "I Can't Remember" stuck in your head after listening to it then your brain is probably not functioning properly. I might be a little late to the party ("Flower Days" was a January 2011 release) but it doesn't matter!

1. This song is INSANE. Really disturbing visual imagery that makes for an oddly poetic punk song. But really, what the hell is he saying?

2. I heard this song in the movie PROM (spoiler: it's not a Coen Brothers movie.) I was like, "Hey! That's the Cranberries!" and then I realized it was Passion Pit and suddenly two very distinctive musical phases in my life morphed into one good cover. Sort of ethereal, no?

3. This song is in John Waters' "Pink Flamingos." It plays during the scene where Divine goes to the deli and gets meat and then puts it between her legs. It's so classy you could just DIE. Not to mention Frankie Lymon was so talented!
